Sometimes, you may end up with a contractor who doesn’t necessarily follow the law. Here are a few ways to spot a contractor who may be out to rip you off:
- Solicits work door-to-door.
- Offers a discount if you find other customers for them.
- Talks about having “left over materials” from a previous job that can bring the cost of your project down.
- Will only accept cash.
- Tells you that you need to get any building permits that will be required for the job.
- Doesn’t have a listed business line in the local yellow pages.
- Calls your job a “demonstration”.
- Puts pressure on you to give them an immediate decision about using their services.
- Offers you an unusally long guarantee on services.
- Requires you to pay for all the work up front.
- Tells you that you can get a home from a lender that they know to pay for the entire job.
