Avoid Being Ripped Off

Sometimes, you may end up with a contractor who doesn’t necessarily follow the law.  Here are a few ways to spot a contractor who may be out to rip you off:

  1. Solicits work door-to-door.
  2. Offers a discount if you find other customers for them.
  3. Talks about having “left over materials” from a previous job that can bring the cost of your project down.
  4. Will only accept cash.
  5. Tells you that you need to get any building permits that will be required for the job.
  6. Doesn’t have a listed business line in the local yellow pages.
  7. Calls your job a “demonstration”.
  8. Puts pressure on you to give them an immediate decision about using their services.
  9. Offers you an unusally long guarantee on services.
  10. Requires you to pay for all the work up front.
  11. Tells you that you can get a home from a lender that they know to pay for the entire job.
